Grants in action: Combatting period poverty with Period Power

Following an nomination for an ACT Community Grant from Atlanta colleague Donna Sturge, we provided a grant to Period Power to fund their mission to fight period poverty by providing free products to women and girls in and around Stoke-on Trent in Staffordshire, England.

A confronting decision is made by more and more women every month when they are met with the choice between buying sanitary products or buying food. Period Power works tirelessly to eradicate period poverty, a term coined to capture the indignity no woman should have to face. The charity collects donations of sanitary items by placing 'dignity boxes' within local Staffordshire businesses, distributing the items across foodbanks, schools, colleges, universities, women's refuges, homeless charities, child welfare and other public spaces for women to access without embarrassment.

The funding is being used by Period Power to ensure the continuation of its work and to allow the team to expand their awareness and education projects in local schools and colleagues.

There are women and girls, missing time from work, missing time from school and feeling isolated because they can’t afford to buy products. Since we started in the schools we’ve been helping, girls’ attendance has gone up, because they’re not struggling any more. Without ACT’s support we wouldn’t be able to help the girls we are now.
